Dear Parishioners,

This week Jesus speaks to us about being “salt of the earth” and “light of the world.” Initially, it might seem as though salt and light have little in common. Jesus frequently uses familiar objects to help His disciples understand an extremely important point.

During the time Jesus walked the earth, salt had great value. Not only did it flavor food, but it also served to preserve its freshness longer. It was used to treat wounds due to its antiseptic properties, and it was even used as currency for trading in some areas. That’s versatility!!!

Jesus used the amazing utility of salt to impress upon His disciples the important role they will play in His salvation plan. They were to “flavor” the earth or enhance the understanding of all people of His father in heaven. They were to preserve the lessons that Jesus taught and spread the good news wherever they went. As they preached forgiveness, they would make hearts pure and clean for the Lord.

Jesus also warned His disciples that if salt loses its flavor, it is worthless. Similarly, if they lose their faith and their will to serve God, their message will no longer have the power nor the impact that it once had. Being a light to the world required the disciples to go out into the world and shout from the mountains that Jesus was truly Lord of all. God chose these people based on their abilities and willingness to follow Him. He knew their strengths and their weaknesses, and He urged them not to keep their gifts to themselves. In other words, don’t put your light under a bushel basket. Jesus wanted them to spread His message to everyone! He has the same message for us!!!

On a different note, I take this opportunity to introduce and welcome to our parish family Fr. Wilson Paculan. He is appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Joseph Church, effective Feb. 1, 2023, by His Eminence, Cardinal Joseph Tobin. We are happy that Fr. Wilson will be with us and benefit from the exercise of his priestly ministry in our Parish. He will be at all the Masses this weekend.

Sincerely in Christ,

Father Lito
