Dear Parishioners,

Love One Another

In this week’s gospel, we hear Jesus speak about love from a slightly different perspective. Jesus spent His short time on earth “living by loving.” His life was an example of love — love given so willingly to anyone open to receive it. He did not look at their status, their history or where they were in their journey of faith. His love was universal.  We now see Jesus asking His people, all of us, to take His example of love and make it our own. He is not only asking us to do as He has done, but to do it as willingly as He did:

“As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

To follow this instruction you really have to want it, because it is not always easy. But our desire to achieve what the Lord is asking and our willingness to trust Him, is enough to help us achieve it. Just as Jesus says, “my grace is sufficient for thee,” our desire to be like Him, to love one another with all our hearts, is the only criteria, so to speak, to achieve the goal.

Jesus never asks us to do something He did not do Himself, and He repeatedly told the apostles that He would always be with them, no matter how difficult things may become. This one commandment, this one request, is really the key to peace and happiness. If we all could just love one another — where would this world be now?

Sincerely in Christ,
